Drawing can really be a challenge sometimes. Creativity strikes you everywhere, it is often very vague at this stage: you can feel it but not touch it.
It’s like a painting covered with dust that we are not allowed to touch.
Concept : I like to let ideas come to me and put them on paper as I go with the flow, so I can reorganize at my convenience the scenario emerging.
I’m talking about scenario because, before touching pencils or a drawing software you have a story to tell. I always thought that the creation happens without forcing it. When there’s force involved it’s counter productive. For example, we will work on an ad for a club: Toastmasters.
Toastmasters help individuals hone their skills in public speaking.
The idea is simple , how to tell a story about the fear that happen to every professional speakers (or any performers) out there.
Challenge and problem serious topic we have here ( the theme of the speaking is not to be taken lightly , some fear the public more than death itself). Corporate advertising always go like this: people in an office, shaking hands, surrounded by more people sitting, waving, and smiling (everyone smiles) . Photography sometimes do not pay tribute to illustrate certain type of situations. I don(t see someone smiles so warmly when he’s about to hit the stage, it’s really quite the opposite!
Solution: A clown in a suit is still a clown, and that’s also true in the cartoon world. To break this corporate image of people in offices smiling and laughing, we will do the opposite, we’ll illustrate a facial expression that will point the real discomfort out.
Inspiration : The atmosphere will be cartoon-like. It is at this very point that Disney comes down from Heaven to helps us. I’m talking about it because, in all Disney animations, the level of facial expressions (and how they are articulated in an elegant, simple way) often leave you speechless : it’s beautiful!
Looney Toons, Comics , or your best shows might do the trick, anything goes! One of my favorite shows (and the greatest ever) is the Cosby Show. Watching Bill Cosby is witness the master at work. There’s not a single moment, when you press pause, without him got you literally rolling.
Bill you are the greatest!! But Calvin (the hero of the famous comics: Calvin & Hobbes) is another great choice. Watch him go:
Tools of the trade: Adobe Illustrator (vectors everywhere), Microsoft OneNote (for moodboard and to display all our ideas), sketchbook, pencil, scanner, ERASER!
Ok, we are ready to settle the scene up. Let’s go! I love blue colors (Matter fact, many people like the blue it’s a soothing color, stress free). Prenon so pretty shades of blue as a backdrop.
We’ll put a guideline in the middle of the canvas for design purposes.
Now let’s take care of the suit, you draw it, scan it, and import it in Illustrator (building shapes with the Pen Tool). Remember, the design should be simple do not give too much thoughts on the details right now.
Ah yes! You feeling troubles? Worried about the design? It’s not perfect? Again we should care about the final result, let’s move on.
A head, a neck, and a suit.
Oh Sir! you are all swag and serious! What are you hiding behind your back?
This serious business, it’s public speaking! You’re supposed to be on stage, there should be a microphone, lights… do not forget, you ARE the center of attention!
It’s really not all that serious. So I guess you will not share your story with us tonight…No problem. Will we have at least some words? This is an advert, we need to know what it’s all about.
Now we will work out the details such as lighting, microphone, logo and slogan.
Note that we could leave the design as it
And that’s all folks! I think it’s time to go out, play with this lazy dog and call the printer on your way out!
Oh, before I forget …
I’ve found this on Tyrese’s instagram (the R&B singer), he ended it with a vibrant “Damn I miss you”
You see, I’ve used various media inspiration (comics, cartoons, shows..) it’s childhood memories that speak to me. The same memories that resonate in all of us. When I wrote this article I used a lot of words like: favorite, love etc..
Creativity should not be something sad. It’s about love and passion, something that we miss so much we want to/have to get it out.
I think every artist must first create from their experiences (and when it comes from childhood it’s even better), we do not try to reinvent the wheel (it’s time waisting), it is just appropriate to grab snippets of what exists and add a personal touch.
Do not force it, do not think about it too much, let it go, let it flow! Listento some good music (R&B or Blues or Jazz or Pop in my case). If you have a block, stop everything, go out.
What do you think of this ad? How would you like it to be? Let me know, fear not :) This is now your time to speak in the comments section below. I wish you a great week ahead.
